What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
Sometimes, alloys are added onto steel to increase the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel is known as Type 316, is resistant to aggressive environments.
There are many varieties of stainless steel , 316. Some common types are L, F, , and H variations. Each is slightly different, and serves reasons that are different. L means that 316L steel has more carbon than the 316.
3316 and 3316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Though they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both are more resistant to corrosion and are stronger at higher temperatures. They cannot also be hardened by heat treatment , and can be easily bent and stretched.
The difference between 316 and Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. But even with its higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 almost in every way. Cost is the same, and both are durable and resistant against corrosion, making it a suitable choice for extremely stressful conditions.
However, for projects that require a significant amount in welding may be a preferred choice because 316 more prone to welding corrosion in comparison to 316L (corrosion of the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. Additionally, it is a suitable stainless steel for use in high temperature, high corrosion projects and that is the reason it is so well-liked for marine and construction.
No 316, nor 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is similar to 304L however, the cost is lower. The 304 is not as robust as the 317 or 317L that are more durable, with more molybdenum in them and better durability overall.
